Minamata disease is a neurological syndrome caused by mercury poisoning. It was first discovered in Minamata city in Kumamoto, Japan in 1956. It was caused by a big release of methyl mercury in Minamata bay. The releases of mercury were continuous and went on from 1932 to 1968. Chisso Corporation are the ones held responsible for this disaster but denied all claims made against them. They were once a fertilizing company and then gradually advanced to a petro chemical and plastic making company.Chisso Corporation dumped an estimated 27 tons of mercury in the Minamata bay.
